Unleashing Tranquility at Loon Lake Retreat: A Dog-Friendly Muskoka Escape

This past week, we had the absolute pleasure of packing up our two dogs and heading to Loon Lake Retreat with some of our closest friends. This lakeside gem in Muskoka, Ontario, was lovingly crafted by Brian and Lynda McKinney in 1979, a true family treasure where generations have built memories by the tranquil waters.

Carefully renovated in 2021, Loon Lake Retreat combines updated comforts with a charm that feels like stepping into another time; inviting you, your family, and, of course, your furry friends to add your own story to its legacy.

Why Loon Lake Retreat is Perfect for Pet Parents and Pups

1. A Thoughtful Welcome for Dogs

From the moment you arrive, Loon Lake makes you and your pups feel right at home. With extra poop bags, a spare leash, and paw cleaner located by the door as soon as you walk in - it’s clear that dogs are cherished guests. Loon Lake also boasts a giant canine treasure chest filled with toys, an extra dog bed, a canine life jacket, spare bowls, and even dog treats! Just remember to bring along a blanket if your dog prefers lounging on the couch.

2. Adventure Awaits Outdoors

For active pups like Bindi and Rosie, Loon Lake is an outdoor paradise. Our mornings began with forest walks, where their noses were constantly on the move, picking up scents and investigating the local wildlife. Chipmunks and birds kept them intrigued all day, and discovering moose tracks on one of our walks added even more excitement!

Though we visited in late October, meaning the lake water was refreshingly cool, the dogs enjoyed the sandy beach area and even took a quick wade. Sunbathing on the dock quickly became another favorite activity, allowing them to soak up the Muskoka beauty in total relaxation.

While we stayed at Loon Lake in what's considered the "offseason", it was undeniably stunning.  We had our side of the lake entirely to ourselves, creating an incredibly peaceful retreat. For those with reactive dogs, I highly recommend visiting in the offseason (especially mid-week) for a truly serene and quiet experience.

3. Cozy Evenings at the Cottage

After a full day of activity, Bindi and Rosie loved winding down as much as we did. Complete with a cozy fireplace, warm blankets, and extremely comfortable couches - the great room became their favorite napping spot, perfect for cuddling up together as the day faded. These peaceful moments were made even more special by the soft crackle of the fire, quiet laughter around the spacious dining room table, and the tranquil privacy of the lake just outside.

For the humans in the group: We also enjoyed Loon Lake Retreat's phenomenal cedar sauna overlooking the lake. Usable year-round, it adds a perfect touch of relaxation no matter the season.

What to Bring:

  1. Dog Food

  2. Collars/collar lights

  3. Dog Blanket (I also brought a king-sized top sheet, which I bring to most of our dog-friendly accommodations)

  4. Dog towel

  5. Leashes / Long Lines

  6. Dog jackets (it gets pretty chilly at night on the lake!)

  7. Optional: Baby gates or barriers. The top deck is easily gated off, you would just need 2 baby gates.

Final Remarks

Loon Lake Retreat offers so much more than just beautiful surroundings; it provides a sense of peace and an opportunity to slow down and enjoy Muskoka’s natural beauty together.

Whether it’s morning coffee on the dock while Bindi and Rosie watch the lake, or watching the sunset paint the sky - each moment at Loon Lake is a reminder of life’s simple joys, captured with the ones we love most. It was a magical place enjoyed by all members of the group (both human and dog).

So pack your bags, grab your leash, and prepare for an unforgettable, truly dog-friendly retreat in Muskoka. Loon Lake invites you to come, relax, and add your story—paws and all.
